Role at The Avenue? Director of Family Ministry
Tell us about your family. I've been married to Matt for 16 years; we have two children, Maggie (12) and Quin (5). Matt and I went to school with each other since 5th grade; however, he was a little on the wild side. We met again after high school when he came into the eye doctor’s office where I worked. The rest is history!!
Where are you from? Born in Garnett, Kansas; raised in the Kansas City/Independence/Blue Springs area.
Past jobs? I received a degree in education and special education thinking I would teach. I worked as the Disabilities Specialist for Head Start in Jackson, Clay and Platte counties. I quit in 1997, six months after my daughter was born. I have held a couple of part-time ministry positions since that time; Director of Preschool Ministry and Coordinator for Single Moms Ministry.
Favorite books? Favorite book of all time is Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. I recently have been reading Mark Driscoll’s books on Missional Living and find them refreshing!!
What are you "all about?" Being a person of substance and integrity, leaving a legacy of Hope in Jesus Christ, finding my true heart and living out of if, dispelling the lies that the enemy has worked so hard to plant in my mind and helping others do the same. I love to study scripture and have that heart-to-heart with God each day; to go where he leads and live as he leads each day. I long for Him to find me faithful and to fulfill His purpose for my life on a daily basis.
Favorite music? I like so many different kinds of music. It really depends on my mood. I can go hard rock, country, pop, Christian, etc. Some of my recent favorites are Taylor Swift, Rascal Flatts, Casting Crowns and Toby Mac. Old favs include Journey, Foreigner, Eagles, Boston and REO Speedwagon. Love to dance to music but only when no one is watching!
What are you passionate about? Being a good mom and wife and serving my family;being an encouragement to everyone I come in contact; caring for those who are hurting or are in need; finding joy in living a transparent life in relationship with others.
Tell us about feeling called to The Avenue. For several months my husband and I felt God was moving us in a different direction from where we were. In Sept. 2007 Matt and I went to a ministry conference about Single Parent Family Ministry. The one thing we both took away from it was the importance of family ministry as a whole. After Nick announced he would be leading the church plant we met with him and shared what God laid on our hearts about this type of ministry. He shared with us that it fit the vision of the new church plant. This was the confirmation we had been waiting for. It really scared me because I’m not really much of an adventure kind of person. I usually play it pretty safe. Serving as a leader in a church plant was certainly going to take me out of my comfort zone and cause me to have a deeper dependence on God. It’s been one of the hardest things I’ve ever done while one of the most rewarding at the same time. God has stretched me and taught me so many things in the last few months….and the adventure continues!
